Profile

For the last five years I have been working entirely in the medium of mosaic, having previously focused on painting, drawing and printmaking. I like to work both figuratively and with abstract designs, occasionally taking the work of artists I admire, such as Gustave Klimtor Edward Burne-Jones, as my starting point. Historical mosaic also interests me, especially those made by the Aztecs using fragments of turquoise and jade.Unlike most artists who work in mosaic I enjoy using perspective to create a sense of depth, the furthest point of which is often a star in a night sky. I have a tendency towards meticulous detail, which can often mean that my mosaics take many hours to complete, but I do derive a great deal of satisfaction from the realisation of my initial idea.My strength I feel is in the meticulous nipping and shaping of my materials, each piece being cut individually to fit between the previous pieces, with a nice even gap for the grout. Last year I acquired my glass kiln which has revolutionised my work. Now my work is either made entirely from fused glass pieces or a mixture of stained glass and fused glass.I love using dichroic glass and was fortunate enough to win first prize and a runner up prize in the CBS 'Dichroic By Design' competition in 2010. Most of my working week is taken up making mosaics for schools, community groups and local councils. These mosaics are often large and very time consuming, but I make sure that I put aside time to make my own work as well.I also regularly teach mosaic at my local community arts centre.
